Level uneven spots in a lawn by putting down a mixture of sand and compost, raking the area until it is level and allowing the area to settle for awhile. Repeat the process of raking and settling several times until the lawn is level. Get tips on the soil to use for leveling a lawn from a professional landscaper in this free video on lawn care.

you know how some people pull out weeds from their garden and call it “weeding” ? same could apply to “thatching”
It’s like combing my hair as it was thinning out -hey he just said that…
i have a big lawn, so this might take some time. i do small areas everyday, and by the end of the month i will be done. should i fertilize where i de-thatched? or should i finish all the lawn and fertilize at the same time?
@ilikecandy11211 Moss is hardier than grass and can handle poor soil. Healthy grass will push out moss and weeds. I would dethatch, then put moss killer on any remaining moss, then pull out when dead.
Plan to aerate right before the growing season for your type of grass. At the same time you can fertilize and over seed. Remember, this process will damage the grass so water a little more frequently (every 2 days). Then go back to 0.5 inch of water every 3 days to promote deep roots.
@Bafflepitch great video, but lets say i have moss, and then i aerate….should i put fertilizer after or should i powerake first, and then apply fertilizer?
Best time to de-thatch is right before the growing season. It does damage the grass some and will take a bit to recover, but will recover quickest right before growing season. You can also aerate you lawn instead. Make sure you fertilize and water afterward. Don’t do it when the weather gets too hot either as it can increase evaporation out of the soil slowing down recovery (this rule especially goes if you decide to aerate the law).
thanks a lot for the video…it helps a lot…I’m frm Malaysia…have a zoysia lawn which thatch up easily…..
@ThatsWhatsUploaded
Yes! Isn’t Thatch what you are trying to remove? The “dead unwanted grass” is called “Thatch”. You remove the Thatch, that is why it is called De-thatching! Also, you don’t remove the dead grass with your hands. The faster/better way is to push the rack back 2-3 inches after you rake. Pushing it backwards, removes the grass and leaves a nice line that is easily raked up later.
uh I do believe it’s DE-thatching, unless you’re adding that “thatch” to your lawn.
is the grass your working
on wet?
@BoogieWithStew I’m planning on thatching my lawn during the Chinook, or Winter Thaw. I don’t know if this is the best time, but everything will be dormant & I do have a lot of trailing weeds: clovers, english ivy. I figure it’ll be a good time to weed & then reseed with a perennial grass.
Best time to thatch? Spring? Fall?
thanks…nice video
Great stuff. Well explained and very useful for a gardening newbie like me. Thanks!
@billicp Oh any make sure you never cut the lawn in when its hot and in direct sun light you will burn the tips of the lawn. And it will take longer to recover
follow this and in the summer you will have a perfect lawn
@billicp After you have put the lawn seed down. Cover with Topsoil & a Mix of sharp sand with some Dry dust Manure and Fish blood and bone meal. And brush in lightly. Then keep watered. When the new grass gets 6cm tal Cut it. Keep the grass cut once – twice a week at the same hight of 1-1.5 inch grass length. Keeping you grass at the same hight will help it thicken out. Make sure the lawn mower blade are super sharp like a kitchen knife so the grass will recover faster.
Holly crap !!!!
Erm maybe before you even think about leveling the lawn you should get some 1st.
Get some weed killer onto the lawn water it in leave it for 7-14 days. Cut the lawn as low as you can . Drum mower will slice of high spots. Then scarify the lawn up and down left to right till there is no weeds and moss left. Get a Fork or a Aerator. Put plenty of holes into the lawn to help draining. Get some Sharp sand and brush it into the lawn and holes. Then Apply Lawn seed all over.
@johnstuartmay I think it’s a weed bed not a lawn
Dont be a prat.Its just called a rake.
