right now I am in SC. I grew up in Pa and did have a garden & greenhouse there. There are many that will grow way into the cool weather. All cole crops are very cold hardy. My parsley makes it through down here with no protection. The parley last through the winter up north in the greenhouse. On the very coldest of might I would put gallons of hot water in there to give off heat. Cole crops if started at the right time can hold their own over winter.

See other comment too. I watched a woman harvest cabbage all winter long out in Colorado. It was under snow. There is an old variety of tomato called sub arctic plenty that handles the cooler temps better than any other.

I lifted the light just to film. The light of the lettuce is not an issue, neither is the cold as they like cooler temps. The bells are perennial if the winter is mild enough. All I am after here is to keep them going until they can go back outside. That way they will produce early. Much better than starting from seed every year. This isn't my place or many things would be done. This is a very temp spot for me. I am looking for a place to move in Feb. Need to get moved....

I hear that avocado started from a store pit will not produce. I belonged to a gardening group year ago and that is what an old timer told me. I would try it anyway. The red varieties of lettuce also do well in cold temps. I had Merville de Quatre Saisons & Lollo Rosso, make it through temps in the teens and 3 days of snow. But it warmed up to the 40's they looked a bit rough. They eventually made a full recovery, filled out nicley and produce great food & seed the next spring.

The different varieties have different flowers. A type "a" flower and a type "b". They open and release pollen & are receptive at different times of day. It is a complex pollination.

My objective here is to see what I can keep going with using the grow lights as minimally as I can. I watched a video of lettuce on window sills in sandwich bags. Lettuce doesn't have large root systems nor are they heavy feeder. Good luck, plz. keep me posted on your progress. Thanks for watching!

Ya, cucumbers take a lengthy day to produce the correct ratio male/ female flower. Plus they would def. need to be hand pollinated. My lettuce is doing wonderful. I moved it out yesterday, night time temps in the 30-40 degree range . Back & forth in & out! :) We are going to hit the 50's in the day, this week!

@Gardensandcabins Thanks fro watching. I didn't run but two small bulbs & the one long one. We are very minimalistic on our energy use, always. I purposely had the plants in the room w/the most activity & used the grow lights for our main source of lighting. We didn't see a jump in the electric. Getting an early jump on bell pepper production of veggie seed is worth it to me. Organic bells go for 4-7 dollars a pound. Seeds are priceless! Lettuce in the sunny windows didn't need lights.

The lettuce I grew in small pots had been taken outside often. My red lettuce withstood three days of snow cover & temps in the teens. I watched a lady here on YT grow lettuce all winter in sandwich bags on her windowsills all winter. Reds get darker color when exposed to cold temps.
