Jeff Pavlat succulent garden design: Central Texas Gardener
See how Jeff Pavlat and Ray Clayton turned a treacherous slope into limestone terraces, patios and staircases. To plant them, Jeff wanted deer resistant plants that needed little water and care. Through the Austin Cactus & Succulent Society, he found a passion for succulents and cacti, including Southwestern natives and specimens from around the world. For design impact, he clusters groups of plants against central standouts in each bed, alternating strong textures with softer plants. Jeff designed an upper story patio to feature aloes and a millstone fountain in a Japanese-inspired setting. In a greenhouse, he tends less cold hardy specimens. They tamed a water-collecting slope at the front door with a pond.

Richard has added eight containers of various sizes and shapes to his self-watering container garden, one of which is the EarthBox. He used the two EarthBoxes last year but with very little success because he couldn’t keep up with the watering because of the drought and his traveling. Now, by attaching the EarthBoxes to the self-watering system he only has to check one water reservoir and all eight of his containers will get watered. He and his wife like to travel so they could connect the float bucket to a garden hose and be gone for an extended period of time and not worry about watering, fertilizing or weeding their garden.

Lawn Mowing with a Scythe
A light trim in a light rain, just to keep up with the spring lawn. Swaths are being cut right to left, each outwards in the same direction. The light work makes possible the 36″ blade, just avoiding the windrow from the previous swath, so as not to foul the cutting edge with wet clippings at the start. Then a backtrack pass under that windrow scatters it and makes pickup unnecessary. Normal heavy cutting would use a 28″ blade and alternate directions; and then pick up and cart off the considerable windrow to the back woods. Heavy cutting is about four times slower than this. Mowing the lawn would then spread over idle time over several days, a bit at a time.
