Any of you raising kids on a mini-farm? What chores do you allocate regarding animal care, garden etc…?

Question by a chick: Any of you raising kids on a mini-farm? What chores do you allocate regarding animal care, garden etc…?

Best answer:

Answer by edwardnow
Is that like the show on TLC called small world? Or is that were you raise small animals? Or does that mean you have a small plot of land?

I think you ask a great question here. I had three sisters and not only was I the youngest I was the only boy. I am sorry that I didn’t have chores to do. I am Intelligent to a small degree but I am completely irresponsible because I was not taught good old fashion values like taking care of my responsibilities. I am paying for it now. I don’t make as much as Joe the plummer.

It depends on their age and size. Depending on their demeanor you may not want them around the horses. Although I personally would love to become a horse whisperer.

Is it possible to sue a lawncare company for not providing me with a nice lawn?

Question by Righteous One: Is it possible to sue a lawncare company for not providing me with a nice lawn?
My lawn looks terrible with brown patches all over. During this past season they have been out here applying what they say is best for the lawn. Finally I called them and told then that the lawn looks terrible. They told me it has what they call leaf patch. A month or two later I called again because it got worse. They then told me it was because my lawn has chinch bugs. My whole point to them was this: If I pay a company for lawn service, I expect to have good results. If along the way, they see theres a bug problem, why didnt they take care of it to avoid further distress? I use this example. You go to a dentist for a cleaning, he does what is routine and nothing more. You then tell him you have a toothache. He now tells you, that you have cavities. Well, a professional would clearly tell you what they found other than the routine visit. So the same applies here. They came out and sprayed but never saw the problem. I feel I should have a whole new lawn from them now. what do you think

Take pictures! Get notatized statements about the appearance of your lawn from any neighbors that will cooperate. Get all your receipts together and head for small claims court. You definitely have a case.

I want to plant a rose garden and other flowers, how do I start? Or take care of it? I never done it before?

Question by : I want to plant a rose garden and other flowers, how do I start? Or take care of it? I never done it before?

Best answer:

Answer by gr8music at qtrtilldawn
First find a good sunny area, easy to get into and work. Depending on the type of rose you want to plant, build up the soil for that. (see links). Turn the soil now, in the winter and get the soil ready for spring. Many insects like rose bushes, so a proper start is easier than fixing it after you started.

Depending on the other flowers you want to plant, some do not like the same soil PH as roses, and you do not want to have plants that shade the roses and/or their stems/roots. Roses do not like wet stems.

If your doing it just for looks, they have many dwarf rose plants that are real hardy, they are more of a bush than a real plant. But they also have smaller or more of a carnation looking rose. They also have creeping, vine type roses, if you have a trellis those are good also.

A lot of this all depends on your area you want to use, full sun, partial sun, shady, etc. All plants take different settings.

Stop by a neighbors home that has a rose garden, ask them, throw out some praise and they will be happy to talk. Besides what I have written in here, unless we know your area, your planting zone, your location for the garden and your soil composition there is not a lot we can say.

Question by : Did you know that the song “Move along” by the All american Rejects…?
Lyrics sound like “Mow the lawn” instead of move along? No joke listen to it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SQg-TzmAr0

So the lyrics sound as if it’s saying:
“Mow the lawn, mow the lawn, JUST TO MAKE IT THOUGH! And even when all hope seems gone, mow the lawn, mow the lawn, JUST TO MAKE IT THOUGH!”

lol I noticed that while playing rock band once.

Question by : I say “Surrup”. No one is answering! 10 Points!?
Hi! I am from North Florida where it is more southern than south florida. I don’t speak THAT southern in the way I say things but sometimes I say stuff that would be considered southern. I was just wondering if saying “cut the grass” is southern? Is it something only people in the south would say? Instead of “mow the lawn”?. Also is pronouncing the word Syrup as (Surrup) only a way that someone would pronounce it in the south? Thanks in advance!

Question by RScott: I usually take care my garden rabbits with a 22 and a stew pot, but I need to “live trap” a few for a friend
She lives in town so I can’t use spring traps because of neighborhood pets. I have an assortment of live traps from a mouse to a large dog and take pride in there use over 40 yrs. but I “Nerver Caught a Rabbit” and “they ain’t no freinds of mine”.(I’m sorry I couldn’t resist). Any help on placement, bait or lures. Points for humor may be awarded but facts will prevail. Relavent source material frm Elmer, Bugs or Roadrunner should be considered. RScott

Answer by momandkids
Why don’t you put some nice veggies in a live trap and go away for a while? You might find a rabbit in the trap when u get back.

I don’t know if catching one live from the wild is a good idea. You might catch a sick rabbit.

How do you take care of roses in a garden?

Question by Scoop: How do you take care of roses in a garden?

Best answer:

Answer by livinintheword †
prune: I trim off each flower after it is done blooming, to encourage the growth in the plant and not in the rose hips/seed pod

fertilize: Each month, I sprinkle down slow release fertilizer so they get enough nutrients

water: In the mornings, I water the plants, at the base, as if you leave moisture on the leaves too much, molds/fungus can grow and desicate (make the plant drop leaves) which will prohibit flowers and growth

Watch for insects and for disease… use sprays that you can get at hardware stores or garden centers to get rid of the bugs (aphids, worms) that like to eat or nest in your roses… and to get rid of the powdery diseases too

What is an easy way to start gardening?

Question by Ktwman: What is an easy way to start gardening?
I will return home at the end of July and would like to start some sort of gardening project in August. But I have never done any kind of gardening/landscaping. I have no idea what kind to buy and plant. I am completely clueless.

We live in Kansas were we experience all 4 seasons. It gets quite windy in our area. The front of the house is facing the south.

Best answer:

Answer by Joanne A.
(August is not a good time of year to start gardening in the USA except for states such as south Florida)

You are gonna love gardening, don’t try to do it all in one year. Get to know where the sun shines the most, and where the shaded areas are. Because you will need flowers for the sun areas, and flowers for the shaded areas.

Since you are a beginner, this year start your garden with plants that you get from a garden center or nursery. They are called bedding plants and come in a six pack. Look for a little tag sticking in the six pact showing directions on how to grow the plants. If the tag is not there, ask for one or buy something else. Directions are VERY important.

Seeds are not always easy to grow. And wildflowers are the hardest so don’t be disappointed if they don’t show up.

Two good things to do for yourself is to call your local County Extension Service and ask for all the information that they have about gardening in your area. They usually have a packet/kit of things for the home gardener.

And number two would be to pick up a couple of beginner books. You really do need to know about soil, compost, mulch and etc.

To keep from over watering or not watering enough, buy a water analyzer from a nursery or garden center. Be sure to read the directions. This will be one of your best tools.

Send for some free gardening catalogs and get use to the different types of plants, colors, and when to plant. They are filled with good informtion and pictures. And they will keep you company during the long winter months. Here is a list of just a very few. There are hundreds more:

Container/pots/window boxes needs:

All need holes in the bottem for water drainage,
Potting soil that comes in bags,
Slow release fertilizer for flowers (not for green plants), OR liquid fertilizer that will need to be used more often-read directions,
Water crystals to be mixed into the soil for holding water,
Bedding plants or full grown plants.

Here is an excellent link to check out for color combinations and plants that look good together:

Q&A: How do I take care of my garden snails and slugs?

Question by LittleMissThang: How do I take care of my garden snails and slugs?
My brother and I found some snails and slugs. How do we take care of them?

Best answer:

Answer by Mackenzie
Well, snails and slugs aren’t really good pets to have, but if you really have a heart for them, here is a guide to care for them.

Feeding
Garden snails and slugs eat plants. They eat plants from gardens. If they are found in your garden, then they have been eating plants from your garden. Pick very few plants and feed them every other day. Remove uneaten food, with a tissue or with gloves on. The slime can stick to your hands.

Handling
Slugs should NEVER be held, but snails can. When holding your snail, always gently pick it up by it’s shell. Be careful that you don’t squeeze it, or touch the slime.

Caging
They sell many tank like containers for small frogs, hermit crabs, and salamanders. You can use one of those to house your snails and slugs. Try to get a medium one. They are clear boxes plastic tanks with colored handles and lids.

Hope I helped you!
